The isle is located in the English Channel and can easily be accessed by several ferries. The average distance covered by the four main ferry services is 10,25km. It is also possible to get to the island by hovercraft.
The county town is Newport, but a lot of other towns have a lot to offer for locals, as well as for tourists that are the foundation of the largest industry. Newchurch is famous for growing garlic that is even exported to France and is holding an annual Garlic Festival. The very well known Island of Wight Festival has been held since 1968 and set a World Record in 1970 for being the biggest rock music event ever celebrated.
Beside tourism, the Isle of Wight has always been connected to maritime industry such as making sailcloth and boats. Although the industry has lessened throughout the years, Cowes is a place with lots of little businesses that are marine and sailing-related such as builders of boats. The resorts here were sought after destinations for holidays ever since Victorian times.
The beauty of the landscape is mainly defined by the coast, but an artistic eye will not get a raw deal with a wonderful natural diversity including fields of Lavender that is harvested to receive oil. It is also one of the most prosperous localities for finding dinosaur fossils in Europe.
